Prettyman Broadcasting Company's Account Executive, Thomas Cummings attended a day long Mock Interview Project on Friday, February 28, 2014 with over 250 students. It was held at Hedgesville High School as a part of the Berkeley County Schools to Work Initiative. This project validates the need for students to compile an attractive and accurate college/career portfolio for the presentation to prospective employers or colleges.
While interviewing approximately twelve students during the day he evaluated the contents of their prepared portfolio and conducted a question and answer "mock" interview session. He was asked to observe and critique their ability to respond to an interview situation.
Written evaluations were completed on each student including personal observations on appropriate dress and demeanor. Constructive comments were provided to aid the student in improving certain areas in their presentation.
The purpose of this program is to better prepare students for real-life experiences in the work world presented by local volunteers from various fields of endeavor in this community.
Wednesday, May 28, 2014 Hedgesville Middle School, located at 334 School House Drive, Hedgesville, WV held a Career Day. On-Air Personality, for WLTF-FM.WICL-FM, Danielle Graff spoke to students in three sessions for 40 minutes each. She offered the students more of a hands on experience of the Radio Industry. The students were allowed to ask questions along with being allowed to record their voices with various sound effects and audio processing. With this exercise they learned that the type of business or reporting determines how you use your voice. If you are reporting on a tragedy, your voice should be low key and presented with respect. Promoting a grand opening or a sales event with lots going on, sounding  excited will make people interested and also excited by the event.
Prettyman Broadcasting Company's employees are very active in the community. This allows connections to be made which are used as a tool in hiring. Tom Cummings, Account Executive, is involved in the local Chamber of Commerce, Tri-State Business Network,  The Norwalk Foundation, and various other community organizations.
Prettyman Broadcasting Company also offers internships to college and high school students.  Brett Gordan, a student at Shepherd University, continued in our intern program throughout the summer of 2013. On January 27, 2014 Kaitlyn Mauck a student at Blue Ridge Community College also joined our intern program. They both worked closely with the office, sales staff, news department, and on-air programming. Internships are a wonderful opportunity for Prettyman Broadcasting and the students. The students learn firsthand about the inner workings of broadcasting. Prettyman Broadcasting also benefits from the intern program. By working with these students we learn what is being taught and expected of our future broadcasters.
