Melissa is a home school student with a great desire to learn. The tour lasted over two hours. She was very interested in the inner workings of radio, from how the signal is transmitted to how the commercials are produced. They discussed the various employment opportunities, not only on-air personalities but office, promotions, and sales. March 28, 2012, at 6:30pm, Pietro DiSante, On Air Personality for WEPM/WICL/WLTF conducted a tour with Falling Waters, Tiger Cub Scout Troop, Pack 16. It is explained during each tour how our facility benefits the community and the different jobs it takes to make it happen. Not only do participants get to see the inner workings of radio but also they are informed of the many career opportunities radio has to offer.

On June 29, 2011 WEPM News Director, Hans Fogle met with Shepherd University Professor Cecilia Mason and an intern with West Virginia Public Broadcasting. Fogle spoke to the intern about some of the differences she might see between public and commercial radio. he also shared advice when it came to job seeking and reporting in general.

Prettyman Broadcasting Company's News Director Hans Fogle spoke with juniors at Musselman High School on Thursday, March 29, 2012. He spoke about his educational and professional experience.

Prettyman Broadcasting Company's Account Executive, Thomas Cummings attended a day long Mock Interview Project on Wednesday, March 23, 2012. It was held at Hedgesville High School as a part of the Berkeley County Schools to Work Initiative. This project validates the need for students to compile an attractive and accurate college/career portfolio for the presentation to prospective employers or colleges.
While interviewing twelve students during the day he evaluated the contents of their prepared portfolio and conducted a question and answer "mock" interview session. He was asked to observe and critique their ability to respond to an interview situation.

Written evaluations were completed on each student including personal observations on appropriate dress and demeanor. Constructive comments were provided to aid the student in improving certain areas in their presentation.
The purpose of this program is to better prepare students for real-life experiences in the work world presented by local volunteers from various fields of endeavor in this community.

Cathy Slemenda represented Prettyman Broadcasting Company at the annual Mock Interviews for high school juniors at Musselman High School in southern Berkeley County on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. These interviews are sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and run between 8:00-11:30 AM in the community library housed within the high school.
English teachers for the junior-level students help them prepare resumes, applications, cover letters, and review for interview questions. The students are taught to dress and act appropriately for a job interview. Approximately 35 community business people volunteered their time to meet with the students and evaluate their performance and prepared materials. Ms. Slemenda met with seven students - each for 20 minutes - and then wrote up comments that were to be shared by teachers with the students. Students will also write follow-up thank-you letters to the individuals who interviewed them.
Some students already hold part-time jobs; others were truly attempting to see if any business people present might hire them.

General Manager, Norm Slemenda, spoke with 3 different 2nd grade classes, of approximately 25 students each, at Gerrardstown Elementary School, on April 26, 2012, for Career Day. He covered the many jobs required in radio, the training needed for each position, the satisfactions and also the frustrations of the radio industry. Mr. Slemenda also, discussed expected salary and benefit ranges. Each class was allowed 25 minutes for the presentation and any questions the students might have.

Prettyman Broadcasting Company also offers internships to college and high school students. In June 2011 Zachary King, a student at West Virginia University, Joe Hutzler a student at High Point University and Lindsay Scaccia, a student at Marshall University, joined our intern program and continued through the summer of 2011. They worked closely with the office, sales staff, news department, and on-air programming. Zachary King was hired as a part-time employee after the completion of his internship. Internships are a wonderful opportunity for Prettyman Broadcasting and the students. The students learn firsthand about the inner workings of broadcasting. Prettyman Broadcasting also benefits from the intern program. By working with these students we learn what is being taught and expected of our future broadcasters.
