You ready for the 4th of July Holiday?

Well it certainly is great to have power back in the building and Internet. Speaking of Internet. Check this out...

Do You Know What Your Teen Is Doing Online?

More than 70% of teens hide some of their online behavior from their parents, according to a new study by McAfee. Plenty of young people are using the internet in ways that might surprise mom and dad. These hidden behaviors include some things you might expect – such as accessing violent (43%) or pornographic (32%) content online – but there’s also a few surprises:

9% have hacked into email accounts
12% have met face to face with a person he or she met on the Internet
15% have hacked into a social network
16% have used their phones to cheat on tests in school

McAfee said parents are often unaware of these behaviors. Nearly half of parents install some sort of online controls, the survey said; 44% know their teens’ passwords, and one in 10 uses a location-monitoring device. The report, titled “The digital divide: How the online behavior of teens is getting past parents,” also includes a list of the “top 10 ways teens are fooling their parents.” Here’s the list, with the percentage of teens who said they engaged in these behaviors:

1. Clear browser history (53%)
2. Close/minimize browser when parent walked in (46%)
3. Hide or delete IMs or videos (34%)
4. Lie or omit details about online activities (23%)
5. Use a computer your parents don’t check (23%)
6. Use an Internet-enabled mobile device (21%)
7. Use privacy settings to make certain content viewable only by friends (20%)
8. Use private browsing modes (20%)
9. Create private email address unknown to parents (15%)
10. Create duplicate/fake social network profiles (9%)

We all know the basics about the Independence Day holiday but did you know some of these facts? I find the most unusual stuff online when I'm surfing around. I love that about my job!

The Fourth Of July 2012

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. As always, this most American of holidays will be marked by parades, fireworks and backyard barbecues across the country. Here are some stats and facts from the U.S. Census Bureau about the Fourth of July.

2.5 million: In July 1776, the estimated number of people living in the newly independent nation.

313.9 million: The nation’s estimated population on this July Fourth.

$3.6 million: In 2011, the dollar value of U.S. imports of American flags. The vast majority of this amount ($3.3 million) was for U.S. flags made in China.

$231.8 million: The value of U.S. manufacturers’ shipments of fireworks and pyrotechnics (including flares, igniters, etc.) in 2007.
