Whats a Sourtoe? Regifting, Friday Toy Memory

Bar Makes Cocktails Using Pickled Human Toes... Ewww.
A Yukon Territory bar is serving patrons a drink called The Sourtoe – containing an actual human toe. The idea was born in 1973, when a riverboat captain found a severed big toe preserved in a pickle jar in a cabin outside of town. Captain Dick, as he is
known, says he came up with the original rules for the drink over the course of a drunken evening with friends: take a beer glass full of champagne, drop in the toe, tip the glass back, and the toe must touch the lips. Today, you can "do" the Sourtoe with any beverage for $5. While it may sound unsanitary, the toes are pickled for months in medical alcohol and then packed in dry salts. "There is no issue with the toe," says Patricia Living, communications director for Yukon Health and Social Services. "The risk of freezing on the way to the bar or being attacked by a pack of wolves would be higher." See more here!

Re-Gifting Horrors

Holiday traditions like eggnog, mistletoe and stockings hanging above the fireplace aren’t going anywhere, and neither is re-gifting. A Harris Poll found that 39% of U.S. adults have re-gifted an item. It’s fairly easy to get away with re-gifting. Only 8% of those who have ever re-gifted said they have been caught doing so. Sometimes it can be hard to tell whether or not an item you receive is, in fact, a re-gifted one. Only 32% of Americans have, to the best of their knowledge, received a re-gifted item. No matter who people are gifting to this holiday season, re-gifting and awkward gift moments are almost guaranteed to happen. When asked what was the most awkward gift they have ever given or received, Americans said:

  • “A bag of dog food. I have a cat.”
  • “Belt buckle. Not a belt, just a buckle.”
  • “A boyfriend of one month bought me an engagement ring that I turned down.”
  • “Three expired bottles of barbeque sauce.”
  • “A giant box of condoms from my mother.”
  • “Jar of hemorrhoid pads.”
  • “A gift card with zero balance on it.”
  • “Picture frames with other people’s kids in it.”
  • “Glow-in-the-dark handcuffs.”

Holidaze

MOGL, a restaurant loyalty platform, has released the results of its recent “Holidaze” survey, which highlights the anticipation and consumer sentiment that often goes along with the “most wonderful time of the year.” The survey found that

-57% of respondents want to “Have more fun” in 2013 as their top New Year’s resolution
-22% saying they want to lose weight
-12% wanting to find a soul mate
-9%  want a new job.

The survey also found that:

31%, would prefer to spend a holiday happy hour with Will Ferrell’s memorable character Buddy the Elf

28% would love to spend it with Chevy Chase’s Clark W. Griswold

24% with Billy Bob Thornton’s Bad Santa,

12% with Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch – who came in last.

When asked which celebrity chef they’d like to cook their holiday dinner

Anthony Bourdain was number one at 32%, followed by 30% who picked Giada De Laurentiis and 27% who chose Gordon Ramsey.

Additional survey results:

26% will attend their company’s holiday party at a restaurant this year,
12% at the office, and
12% at a hotel ballroom.

However, 51% said their company has no plans for a holiday party this year.

12% say they go out to eat “a lot more often,” during the holidays, while 35% say “a little bit more often”, 8% eat out “less often”, and 45% eat out just as often as they do any other time of year.

34% say they tip “a little bit more” than normal, 5% say “quite a bit more,” 1% double their tip, but 60% say there is no change in their tipping behavior at all

40% choose to stash their holiday bonus – if they’re lucky enough to get one – in a 401k account, compared to 33% who go on a shopping spree, 16% who donate it to charity, and 12% who take it to Vegas, where it usually stays in Vegas.
