6:15- Mother's day is THIS Sunday. So you'd better get to the store today. Here are some other Mother's day things you might find interesting from the National Retail Federations “Mothers' Day Spending Survey”.
M" is for the many things you can give mom for Mother's Day but according to the National Retail Federation annual poll, Americans may be cutting back a bit on their purchases compared to 2013.
With that magical day fast approaching, the NRF’s “Mother’s Day Spending Survey” reveals that a total of $19.9 billion will be spent on gifts or approximately $162.94 for each mom in the nation.
That works out to be $6 less in spending than last year when the NRF put the average amount spent for mom at $168.94.
As always, greeting cards are the most popular choice for consumers with 81.3 percent making that purchase while just over two-thirds will buy flowers. Meanwhile, one in three Americans will pick out some piece of apparel they think mom will enjoy.
Other Mother's Day gift mainstays include jewelry, books, housewares, gardening tools and gift certificates for spas. And in a sign of these hi-tech times, at least one in seven will surprise that special lady with a tablet, camera or smartphone.
Naturally, folks will want to get mom out of the kitchen on her special day, resulting in $3.8 billion spent on either brunch or dinner at a nice restaurant.
