The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Review

Last week I wrote about my excitement for the release of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey". Now I can talk about it! I saw it at it's midnight release, which is not easy, when the movie is almost 3 hours long. I will say though, it flew by! Another great installment in Peter Jackson's films about Middle Earth. I was wondering how Peter Jackson was going to take a small book like "The Hobbit" and spread it out over 3 films, but now it is easy to see how. The additional information he added from the Appendices of The Lord of the Rings really makes the story feel connected with his prior trilogy. This includes many of Lord of the Rings' characters returning for The Hobbit, even if they were not actually in the original Hobbit book.

After I saw "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" I read a lot of the Appendices in The Lord of the Rings and all of the information that Peter Jackson can use should make Part II: The Desolation of Smaug and Part III: There and Back Again very exciting!

Now, back to Part I: I loved the perfomances of Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Ian McKellan as Gandalf and all of the dwarves, but I think the best perfomance may have been Andy Serkis as Gollum. The way he makes you feel for the character is truly amazing. Acting was not an issue at all, as even the minor supporting characters did a great job.

The story was great too, although they did not get very far in the journey, even though the film is almost 3 hours long. If I have any complaints about the movie, which I really don't, it would be that they used CGI maybe a little too much. I loved seeing all of the art and make-up in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Not saying that it is not in this movie, but they relied on CGI where they might not have 10 years ago. This is a very small complaint.

Now we have to wait an entire year for "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", but I have a good feeling that it will be worth the wait!
Go see "An Unexpected Journey" today! I give it an A.
