Today is St. Patrick's day. We all know that we wear green, drink green beer and look for shamrocks...BUT do you know much about the Saint the day is after? I don't. So I did a little research and got this info for you. It's interesting stuff. Here is my St. Patrick's Day book report.
St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the 4th century to a wealthy Romano British family, and was stolen by slavers when he was 16.He confessed that he was told by God in a dream to flee from captivity to the coast where a ship would take him back to Britain. It did.In 432, he said that he was called back to Ireland - and explained the Holy Trinity by using the Shamrock.He died in AD 461 on March 17th, which is the date we celebrate St Patrick’s.He became the patron saint of Ireland in the early 17th century. Brigid of Kildare and Colmcille are also recognized as Patron Saints of Ireland.Originally, the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue, but green was used to celebrate his day from the 17th century.He did not drive the snakes from Ireland, as post-glacial Ireland never had snakes. Some say he drove the Druids out of Ireland, and they had a lot of serpent symbolism.Saint Patrick’s feast day was celebrated by the Irish from the 9th and 10th centuries.When the 17th of March falls during Holy Week, St. Patrick’s day changes, in 2008 it was officially observed on March 12 - but it won’t happen again until 2160.In 1903, St Patrick’s Day became an official public holiday in Ireland. In 1903, it was decreed that pubs and bars be shut in the day because of over drinking. It was repealed in the 1970s.The Irish Society of Boston organized the first recorded St Patrick’s Day Parade in the world on March 18th 1737. It was held to protest the low social status of the Irish in America. New York’s first annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade was in 1762. Philadelphia since 1771, Morristown, New Jersey, since 1780, Boston, Massachusetts, since 1804 and New Orleans, Louisiana, since 1809.The first Saint Patrick’s Day parade in the Irish Free State was held in 1931.The shortest St Patrick’s Day Parade happens in Dripsey, Cork and lasts just 100 yards between the villages two pubs.In the mid 1990s, the Irish Government set up a group called St. Patrick’s Festival as a way to highlight Ireland and its culture.In 1780, General George Washington allowed his troops a holiday on March 17 “as an act of solidarity with the Irish in their fight for independence.Every year since 1991, March has been proclaimed Irish-American Heritage Month by the US Congress or President due to the date of St. Patrick's Day.It is one of the leading days for consumption of alcohol in the United States, and is typically one of the busiest days of the year for bars and restaurants.Seattle and other cities paint the traffic stripe of their parade routes green.Chicago dyes its river green and has done so since 1962 when sewer workers used green dye to check for sewer discharges and had the idea to turn the river green for St Patrick's Day.Indianapolis also dyes its main canal green.Savannah dyes its downtown city fountains green. Missouri University of Science and Technology.St Pat's Board Alumni paint 12 city blocks kelly green with mops before the annual paradeIn the Northeastern United States, peas are traditionally planted on Saint Patrick's DayColumbia, SC dyes its fountain green in the area known as Five Points (a popular collegiate location near the University of South Carolina). A two day celebration is held over St Patrick's Day weekend.The Cincinnati Reds were the first team to ever wear Saint Patrick's Day hats in 1978. The Boston Red Soxwere the second team to start wearing Saint Patrick's Day hats in 1990.Between 15 and 17 March 2009, a number of NBA teams wore green jerseys in recognition of Saint Patrick's Day including the New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors and Dallas Mavericks.
