Social Media

What is with this social media phenomenon? I just find it interesting how all of these websites have changed our lives in just a few years. They have many advantages, including: Information, connections, and conversations, as well as free publicity, but also there are disadvantages. I feel many of us are spending too much time on these sites and apps, myself included. This week the weather outside was fantastic. I went out to the park, played some baseball, and a thought hit me: For all of us to connect to the world, are we disconnecting from the world?

We are spending so much time with social media, that we are not being social ourselves. When we hang out, we are taking pictures to post on Facebook. When we go to concerts, we are recording videos to post on YouTube. When we go to sporting events, we are tweeting live scores instead of just enjoying the game.  Why can't we just enjoy the moment anymore? Just something I thought of. A few ideas I came up with: Designate times when you want to check your Facebook or Twitter accounts. Go on with your day, then at those times you can check them. Maybe once in the morning, once at night like you would your e-mail. Give yourself a 15 minute time limit and move on. Otherwise you can be on these sites all day. Instead, go enjoy your life. Maybe social media is how you enjoy your life, if so, go ahead.

A main problem these days is the connection to new information. We need news instantly, sports scores instant because we don't want to miss out. I remember when I would wake up and read the paper to see the latest sports transactions. Those were the days......

And YES, I will be posting this on Facebook and Twitter and the odds that you are reading this because you saw it on a social media website are almost 100%. See? I said there are many advantages to it.
