Hotel Intel, Mosquito "Pest" Fest, Coolest Cooler Ever!, Strange Celebrations ar

6:15 I'm the freebie queen. I love the free stuff you get at hotels, soap, lotions, shampoo and conditioners. So when I read this blog post, I thought, that's all you're ever supposed to take from hotels. Too bad that people get greedy and take things that are NOT supposed to go home with you. Unfortunately, hotels don't usually go after thiefs. That makes me sad and I'm certainly NOT condoning stealing of things other than the freebies. Just an interesting article.

Since we are talking about hotels, read this unrelated but interesting tidbit: In an experiment, five Paris hotels have launched a plan allowing guests to "pay what you want". The three- and four-star hotels are a little away from the city's tourist centers and hope the novel idea will increase business. The owners of the hotels are optimistic and confident that clients will not abuse the plan.

6:30- They are having a fest for the pests! MOSQUITO FESTIVAL _ The Great Texas Mosquito Festival begins today in Clute, Texas. It includes the Mr. and Mrs. Mosquito Legs Contest, the Mosquito Calling Contest, and the Skeeter Beaters Baby Crawling Contest.

6:45 The coolest Cooler. On, they've just exceeded $7 Million in pledges. So all we have to do now is wait for this thing to be made. I bet it will FLY off the shelves.

This is why I think this is so cool:

  • It has a blender

  • It has a solar panel

  • It has a wi-fi

  • It has a flashlight inside the cooler so you can see your beverages in the dark

  • It has a charger for your digital devices

  • It has a bungee cord to hold your stuff down!

I have never been so excited about a stinkin cooler in my life!!!!!!!

You can see the video and read about it here:

7:15 It's Friday! Let's Celebrate. We've passed 4th of July and Labor Day seems a little ways off so let's celebrate like they do in other countries with wacky celebrations from around the world.

• “Cascamorras” (Baza, Spain): Each year on September 6th locals completely cover themselves in grease to reenact the stealing of a statue that took place 500 years ago.
• “Up Helly Aa” (Lerwick, Scotland): The highlight of this modern-day Viking celebration is the burning of life-size Viking longships.

• “Songkran Water Festival” (Chiang Mai, Thailand): Every April 13th-15th this Thai town has the biggest water fight in the world.
• “Festival of St Vincent” (Manganeses de la Polvorosa, Spain): Villagers round up a goat and throw it from the top of a bell tower while others below hold out blankets to catch it.
“Baby Tossing” (Sholapur, India): Once a year mothers throw their babies of off 50-foot ledges to be caught by villagers below in order to secure ‘good luck’ for their children. I saw a video on least they catch the kids in a sheet. See the video here:

• “Cooper Hill’s Cheese Rolling Festival” (Gloucester, England): Every year hundreds of people go rolling down this English hill while chasing a wheel of cheese. Injuries are common.
“Boryeong Mud Festival” (Boryeong, South Korea): Just like it sounds. If mudslinging’s your thing, this is your festival. You can slog through it, roll in it, throw mudballs … whatever you like.
“Batalla de la Rata Muerta” (El Puig, Spain): As you may be able to tell from the name, during this event at the fiesta of San Pedro Nolasco residents throw dead rats at each other.
• “Las Bolas de Fuego” (Nejapa, El Salvador): To celebrate surviving a volcanic eruption villagers get together each year and throw the equivalent of Molotov cocktails at each other.
“Moose Dropping Festival” (Talkeetna, Alaska): In celebration of the US state’s official animal, locals attempt to drop moose poop onto targets from hot air balloons.

• “La Tomatina” (Buñol, Spain): For the past several decades on the last Wednesday of August this small Spanish town witnesses the largest tomato fight on Earth.

They did a similar tomato festival in Chicago and will also have one in NY this year too. IF you're interested. They had one in Frederick last word if they're doing one in 2014.

More evidence suggests some drinking may help your heart, but too much can harm it. Two new studies, one covering 52 countries worldwide and the other from Scandinavia, link low-to-moderate alcohol consumption to a reduced risk of heart attack. It’s as yet unclear whether all types of alcohol offer the same benefits but researchers are clear on what ‘moderate drinking’ entails: 2 glasses of alcohol per day for men, and no more than 1 serving per day for women. Both studies find increased risk of harm when drinking goes from moderate to heavy. In fact, having 6 or more drinks in the past 24 hours is associated with a 40% increased risk of heart attack, especially for those over age 65. (So you can’t hit the moderate mark by averaging out your consumption over 7 days … cheater.)

8:45 Friday Toy Memory: Retro candy. I remember when I was a kid I went to summer camp each year. At the end of the night, they'd let us go to the snack bar where we could get up to two items. We'd have a little punch card with the amount of money we had on credit at the snack bar. I remember going up to the shack with the orange mosquito lamps going and the older counselors and camp employees working behind the shack. It was overwhelming all the crazy candy that we could get. You could get no less that 30 different types of sugary delights from:

  • Mike and Ikes
  • Good N Plenty
  • Hot Tamales
  • Fun Dip (this was my favorite as it was concentrated sugar with a sugar stick!)
  • Now and Laters
  • Nerds
  • Little Hugs Drinks
  • Chocolate of all kinds
  • Licorice strings (like shoelaces) and many more.
ahh those were the days, they'd get us all sugared up and then send us to bed and play taps to make us go to sleep. Ha!
