Reasons to Get Up and Get Out

Well everybody’s got reasons why we just can’t seem to get to the gym, well I have just the thing to help motivate you. I have 5 good reasons why you can go out doors to exercise.

5. Fresh Air- Every single one of the human body's 100 trillion cells must receive a constant supply of oxygen. Without air, humans will die in three minutes. The heart circulates blood to the lungs, where it exchanges carbon dioxide for fresh oxygen. And where's the best place to get fresh oxygen? Outdoors!

Fresh air actually improves the brain's functioning. It also increases the brain's production of serotonin, which helps you sleep more soundly, and instills a sense of happiness and well-being.

4. Sunshine- The is more to the sun than to just give light and heat. Studies by people way smarter than I have determined that there are a host of medical reasons why we need the sun. Sunshine is a remarkable antiseptic. Very lightly tanned skin resists germs and infection better than completely un-tanned skin does. But that doesn't mean you should forego the sunscreen. And remember not to bake yourself in the sun for hours on end.

Sunshine keeps you healthy on the inside, too. It increases the number of white blood cells, which boosts immune system strength. Believe it or not, sunlight also converts your body's bad cholesterol into vitamin D. Sunshine is so powerful that it takes a potentially harmful substance and transforms it into something your body needs this in turn, increases calcium absorption.

Sunlight also increases the brain's production of endorphins, which, like serotonin, provide a sense of well-being and help prevent depression. Just going for a 30-minute walk when the sun is highest in the sky, even if it's cloudy, will help. This will help prevent Seasonal Affective Disorder in winter, which affects one and a half million people in the United States alone. This is the whole reason behind the idea to fortify milk with vitamin D. Sunlight also stimulates thyroid function, which boosts metabolism and promotes weight loss. Have you ever noticed that your appetite is smaller in summer?

Exposure to natural light also boosts melatonin production at night, which improves sleep. Natural light also aids in digestion and improves liver function, which encourages waste elimination. Natural light even improves circulation, lowers heart rate, and regulates blood pressure and blood sugar.

3. It’s Easy to Work Into Your Dailey Routine- Lets face it, whether you’re 15 or 50, life today is hectic so exercise should be enjoyed daily, and you should take advantage of the easiest means to make it an everyday part of your life. If you belong to a gym, you have to make a special effort to get there. In other words, you have to get in the car and drive somewhere. Plus, you have to work it into your busy schedule.

The drive itself could take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes--and that's just one way. So that means you're trying to cram another 20 to 60 minutes of drive time into your day. Just walking out your door at home on the other hand, takes far less effort and time.

2. It’s Free- Hey, times are still tough and some of us are still keeping the belt tight! Exercising outdoors doesn't cost one thin dime! You don't have to pay any expensive gym fees. You don't have to buy extra gas to drive there. You don't have to purchase the latest workout fashions to make yourself presentable to everyone else at the gym. Just throw on that ratty t-shirt and go for it.

1. It’s Fun- That’s right, it may be a little anti-climatic, but it’s the truth! Let's face it: gym equipment makes for some pretty monotonous and boring exercise routines. But if you exercise outdoors, it's vastly more fun! The possibilities are virtually endless: bicycling, walking, kayaking, hiking, volleyball, basketball, soccer, kickball, hockey, baseball and football. You could even get a yoga mat and do yoga on your backyard deck!

Environmental psychologists at the University of Michigan found in a 2004 survey that people who walk outdoors are likely to walk for longer periods of time if their route includes trees, plants or bodies of water; they also benefit from mental revitalization.

So have fun getting your game on...or just enjoy a brisk walk to kick things off... in the great outdoors!

There you have it, 5 good reason to get up and get out, but then again maybe I forgot to mention the most important reason. The look on peoples faces when you post the healthier pictures online.

What to do,what to do?!
If you're anything like me,a huge football fan, then you are looking for something to do until the season gets under way again! Well have no fear, I have 5 good ideas that will help kill some time untill the NFL Network starts having new footage.

1. Watch Basketball- With March Madness right around the corner, sure, you could watch basketball. But really, how enjoyable is basketball? I like NCAA hoops just fine. The players seem to try harder (because they’re not making any money), the crowd is riled up and entertaining, the coaches appear to actually give a damn about what’s going on.

Of course that gives way to the exhaustingly long NBA postseason, no thanks! I hate the diva-like attitudes of the players. I hate how all the coaches are spineless cowards that don’t even bother fighting back when their players cause a ruckus. I hate that David Stern is trying to turn all the players into robots because a couple of bad apples ruined things for everyone else. I hate that trades are made not because a team wants to acquire a good player and make their team better right now, but because they want to dump salaries and expiring contracts to make room for the next hot free agent that inevitably won’t sign with them. Moving on!

2. Get Hyped for Baseball- There’s nothing like going to the park and watching your favorite team play, but there’s a problem with this: there’s snow everywhere. As much as I love baseball, I don’t want to be thinking of home runs and diving catches when I’m dressing for armageddon to go to work in the morning. It’s just not going to happen…yet.

It’s still a little early for baseball. But that’s OK, our beloved steroid monsters will be back soon enough, and will have your attention for all of two weeks before ESPN starts caring way too much about the NFL Draft and shoving that down our throats.

I’m sure we can think of some other things to do until then, right?

3. Drink Heavily- Now we’re talking, I’m normally a man who drinks good beer. Most of my beer tastes like air fresheners, bourbon-laced brownies, or spoiled fruit… but damn it, sometimes you need to fall back on your crutch. So when your bored on Sunday afternoons with nothing to do and you can't wait for the basketball games to tip-off, or opening pitch is still a ways off, get a couple of buddies to come over, and have a good time!

Aside from alcohol poisoning, what’s the worst thing that can happen? Remember kids: don’t drink and drive. That’s a bad thing.

4. Get to the Gym- Now bear with me hear folks! We spent weeks on the couch drinking beer, eating junk food and basically sitting on our butts watching our fantasy teams online. Whatever you pleasure, it’s time to get to the gym and lose all that poundage.

You don’t want to be walking around looking like a land monster when the summer comes along, do you? Hell no. You’ve gotta trim that waistline and look BUFF.

Lord knows I need to.

Go running, lift weights, flip cars over…whatever you feel like you need to do to get into shape, you should do.

5. Ignore Everything...It's the Offseason!- Why not?

ESPN provides wall-to-wall coverage of the league, even in the middle of May. You can watch the NFL Network every day. You can go to your favorite blogs and read mock drafts 11 months ahead of time. You can obsess over free agent signings and who the chic SuperBowl pick will be for 2011. You can donate money to your favorite player’s lawyer fund.

There’s no shortage of options… when they say the NFL is a year-around business, they aren’t kidding.

The NFL is everywhere, even during the offseason. You will never escape it, so you might as well embrace your love for the league.

I’m probably going to do a little bit of everything on the list, but in the back of my mind, I’ll be waiting for training camps to open so I can get myself all hyped up for another season, just for the inevitable failure that comes in January.

If training camp and news of pitchers and catchers reporting doesn’t get you up… if you don’t like to get your drink or your lift on… if you aren’t into hoops… it doesn’t matter. You have options, and at the end of the day, you don’t have to give up football when the action leaves the field. There’s plenty to do.

Tips to make the Superbowl Super
With the big game this weekend, here are a few things to remember if your going to be the "Host With the Most" for Superbowl Sunday.

  • Make sure all of your guests designate their sober drivers before kick-off or help arrange ride-sharing with other sober drivers.
  • Find unique ways to recognize the designated drivers at your party.
  • Give them a great spot to watch the game.
  • Whatever non-alcoholic beverage they are drinking, make sure their glass is always full.
  • Let them have the first pass at the buffet table.
  • Make sure their cars are easy to access when it is time to start driving people home.
  • Serve plenty of food.
  • Offer a variety of non-alcoholic choices like non-alcohol beers, soft drinks, juice and water.
  • Serve one drink at a time and serve measured drinks.
  • Only serve alcohol to guests over 21 years of age.
  • Determine ahead of time when you’ll stop serving alcohol, such as one hour before the end of the party or at the end of the third quarter of the game (just like NFL stadiums) and begin serving coffee and dessert.
  • Add the numbers of local cab companies into your phone so they are just one touch away.
  • Take appropriate steps to prevent anyone from driving while impaired.
  • Be prepared for guests to spend the night if an alternative way home is not available.
So wheather your team is playing the Superbowl or not, follow these tips and everybody will have a gret time!
