New Year's Eve Songs...
Have you ever wondered what they are singing and what it's about when we sing "Auld Lang Syne"?  I found a clever article about this. I had to laugh because I never sing the song correctly. Here's the article and the wikipedia page about the song.

It turns out that "Auld Lang Syne" is an extremely old Scottish song that was first written down in the 1700s. Robert Burns is the person whose transcription got the most attention, so the song is associated with him.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auld_Lang_Syne

According to this page, a good translation of the words "auld lang syne" is "times gone by." So (incorporating a couple of other translations) when we sing this song, we are saying, "We'll drink a cup of kindness yet for times gone by."

Here's a whole list of  New Year's songs from Beliefnet...who knew?

Would you eat this taste treat?
There are 2 things I love in this world...foodwise. Hamburgers and cheese. Put together it's a cheeseburger but Denny's has taken that to a whole new level. Enter the  Mac n Cheese Big Daddy Patty Melt.  The Patty Melt has invited its side dish friend to join the party inside the buttery toasted bread for a taste sensation beyond belief. Imagine having the mac and cheese inside the sandwich...AWESOME! Ok, the downside is that it's 1,600 plus calories and it has an army's worth of sodium, but it does sound delish doesn't it? Tell me this pic doesn't inspire you to lick your chops just a little? YUM!

**one thing I noticed...the salt shakers on the table with this taste delight are empty. Hmmm. Is that because they put it all in the sandwich? Or is that they don't want to encourage any further salt consumption beyond this dish?...I'll have to ponder that!

The tops of 2011!
I always love seeing those end of year retrospectives. The ones that include music, people that we lost in the last year, and the top news stories. It makes you realize how much happens from year to year. Each year Time Magazine is my "go to" because they categorize 54 different topics. They have a list for everything. When you get to this page, you'll probably find lots to occupy your time. Here is the link.

Some of my favorites are:

Top 10 Pop buzzwords
Top 10 Food trends (meh)

Top 10 Fleeting Celebrities- Remember this  guy?

Fondue anyone?
I had a Christmas party to go to last night. I decided I'd try to make an Cider Cheese Fondue recipe. It didn't turn out well at all. I was so disappointed. The point of making it was to bring something homemade to the part. Instead, I ended up having to buy something. I think the cheese I used. Take a look at the ick that I made (it didn't taste that bad but it didn't look right...ugh)

Give a gift...to a TV Character
So if you knew your favorite TV character, would you give them a present? Someone thought this up and put it into a blog post. I wracked my brain trying to figure out what I'd give Mad Men's Don Draper.

Festive Christmasy Things!
When I was a kid, my mom and I were shoe shopping and this Christmas music came on the overhead. My mom asked the store associate who sang the music. The woman produced an album..."Christmas Disco". It's fantastic. From the snappy disco elf lady on the cover, to the catchy tunes, you can't beat it. Here's a link to Amazon where you can listen to clips from the album. Enjoy!

Best Christmas iPhone Apps!

I love playing with my smartphone and all the apps you can get. For the holiday season, I found a great list of apps for Christmas. Check them out...I like the snowglobe one!

My get up and go song...what's yours?
Earlier I mentioned my "Get up and go song". Everyone has one. It's the song that you play when you want to get going either in the morning, or you need a little pick-me-up in life. Here's mine.

Donna Summer "Heaven Knows" with the group Brooklyn Dreams. Hear it here...

Crazy Light Displays
Last night, I went to visit some friends who live on a farm. Every year, their neighbor puts up this crazy light display. I've always loved seeing these things, but I wonder how much money they spend in electricity. Where are some local light displays?

Have you seen this video? Wow. How much time (and money) do you have on your hands to create these? I love them personally!

And this one is another that I think is prettty fun too!

You'll Shoot your eye out kid!
One of my favorite Christmas movies is "A Christmas Story". It's funny and timeless, I think. Hans and I were talking about favorite Christmas movies. His is "It's a Wonderful Life". I've never seen it. Seriously.  A few weeks ago I made the mistake of posting that I have never seen it on Facebook and got a barrage of people yelling at me. I guess I was never big on the classic films. I will watch it eventually. Promise.

Here is a
listing of all the Christmas TV programming for the remainder of the season--on many channels. Enjoy!

Will you keep a few pounds off during the holidays?
Hans and I were talking about how you can reduce your weight gain during the holidays. I read a pretty helpful blog from Washington Post Online that features people that have managed to lose or keep off weight during the holiday season. Read the article here!

By the way, here is our dear Hans...I caught him mid sentence! He was involved in a conversation with someone who he was preparing to interview. Ooops! :)

Some little tidbits from today
Looking to give a gift to the person who has everything or is "green"? How about these sustainable gifts. I like some of these ideas. They are cool... Check them out here!

Also, earlier in the morning, I mentioned the two pot-bellied pigs (Stimpson and Ren)  that were found roaming in an office park near the Baltimore/Washington Parkway. They've been given a home. Read about them here! How adorable are they? I think its hilarious that the piggies like spaghetti.

What will Madonna sing at the 2012 Super Bowl?
Earlier this week, it was announced that Madonna would be the Half-time performer for the 2012 Super Bowl. I, for one, am stoked!  If I could call Madonna, I'd ask her to play in order of when the song came out...

1. Lucky Star
2. Vogue
3. Human Nature
4. 4 Minutes  with Justin Timberlake (maybe Justin Timberlake could come back to the Superbowl and redeem himself?)

Anyway, those are my votes.  Billboard took a poll of their readers and what they want to hear. Check out what other people want to hear
Madge sing.

All the rest of the stuff on Friday!
Earlier I mentioned my Friday Toy memory. The Easy Bake Oven! Awesome, nothing like cooking with a lightbulb!
I love the fact that my parents just let me play with this thing, in the basement...without supervision. I guess in the 70's we weren't so concerened about safety!

Later at 8:20- I ran down a list of the 12 Funny Things your Christmas tree says about you. It's a cute little list courtesy of Readers Digest. Personally, I have a vintage aluminum tree similar to this one ( I even have th revolving light!)

Did you go see any Concerts?
I love going to concerts! I haven't gone to too many in 2011. I happened to see this list of the Top 20 concerts. I was surprised at what was number 1 on the list. I was also surprised that "American Idols Live" didn't rank higher. Check it out here.
